Week 13:
The intended experience for players was a 007 Style, follow the clues and uncover the big secret to take down the bad guys and save the world type of game. Ultimately, the game was intended to be difficult and exciting enough for the player to constantly be entertained and to gain a sense of achievement, without being so difficult that they become frustrated and lose interest.
For the group, designing the project was a way for us to practice and improve our design skills, and broaden our knowledge of various interfaces and how they function together.

And just to briefly sum up what’s in that link:
- “The Brotherhood” rebel group is loosely based on Project Mayhem from Fight Club, but more ruthless and power hungry.
- Final Game Sequence – Hacking/Security Surveilance inspired by hacking element of the videogame Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines
- Game setting – ie – the troubled world & conflict between rebels & government inspired by Year Zero ARG.
Tagline: Do you have what it takes?
Plot Description: The year is 2011 and around the world, economies have been in constant decline since the 2009Global Financial Crisis. Most nations are now greatly impoverished and a constant state of unease has settled over America, once the world’s strongest nation. The government, weakened by poverty and corruption now fights for control against the many rebel groups, all hoping to overthrow the government in its vulnerable state.
The Global Crisis Bureau (GCB) is the newest anti-terrorist force, formed to take action against the ever-growing rebel forces, and is now taking on new recruits to help fight the rebels and restore order to the country. The GCB monitors all kinds of criminal activity, but have noticed an increase in activity of one group in particular. This rebel group is well known for creating mischief, but this time it seems more serious…
“The Brotherhood” is a band of brutal rebels, terrorists and mischief makers who live for power and chaos. So far, any efforts to overthrow the government have been feeble, but as of late, there seems to be a mysterious atmosphere of excitement emanating from group; they’ve become restless and their attacks on the public are becoming reckless and more numerous.
As one of the GCB’s newly recruited Agents, your job is to find out exactly what the Brotherhood is up to. Your first task is relatively simple; track the online activities of The Brotherhood’s more active members for any clues. After a bit of digging, you uncover that The Brotherhood has recently taken control of pharmaceutical giant “ProChem”. But that’s not all; ProChem is currently working on a top-secret project: they have recently discovered a new viral strain, called the “MANGE” virus which is highly infectious, resistant to all known antibiotics and preventative medications.
As it turns out, The Brotherhood plans to use this virus as its main bargaining chip in taking over the government. You report this troubling information back to your superior at GCB Headquarters, but receive no response. After a brief moment of uncertainty, you are contacted by one of the Bureau’s secret agents, who informs you of the plan to eliminate the Brotherhood: take down the rebel group by hacking their systems; destroying all their research, whilst simultaneously destroying their laboratories and erasing all traces of the virus.
With plenty of instructions from your Secret Agent friends, you manage to successfully hack The Brotherhood’s ProChem system, and hastily and permanently erase all ProChem’s research and records, watching on through their surveillance cameras as your burly GCB Contact, takes care of destroying all traces of the Virus, and ProChem’s laboratories.
Player logs onto their email account.

Player reads the email from the GCB and clicks the link to the YouTube recruitment video.

Players watch the video again to get all the details.

From watching the video a second time, players find the link to GCB website from the YouTube video

Players read the information on the GCB website and gain insight into what their mission is.

Players look through the GCB website and find links to the profiles of the ‘Brotherhood’ members, Facebook, myspace and twitter accounts.

Players then go to the networking sites, the first link is for Brother Canuses facebook profile.

Players look through the rest of the links and go to brother Seius’s and Decimus’s profiles to find clues. The brotherhood have sent comments to one another, and the players are trying to decipher what’s going on.

From searching through the members of the ‘brotherhoods’ pages, the players finds a link to proChem website which one of the brothers has posted to another.

Players go to ProChem website where they are faced with a login and password. The players are trying multiple username and password combinations from the information left on myspace, twitter and facebook accounts.

Players Crack the code, after multiple attempts (YAY)

Players are led into the restricted section of the ProChem website, players read through the information

The Players are not sure where to go from the restricted area, so they back track to some of the brotherhood’s myspace profiles for more information.

They didn’t find anything extra so the players go back to proChem website in the restricted area where they discover the link to delete all the files/ watch the flash teaser.

Players enjoy the flash teaser and video.

Final email confirmation from GCB website is sent to the players, to thank them for taking down the brotherhood.

Leading up to the play through of The Brotherhood ARG the group encountered some problems which we thought would cause issues for the final play through. These problems included having difficulty embedding files and getting the password and user name to work for the end game. Luckily when the day came to play The Brotherhood ARG these things had been sorted out. Although these issues had been overcome there were a lot of disruptions on the day of the event. During preparation there was a fire drill and no connection to the internet. This left the group with very little time to organise things as proficiently as we would have liked. Despite this being the case when the play through group played The Brotherhood it ran through smoothly with not one interruption or mistake. The play through group concluded that they really enjoyed the game and discussed aspects which they thought was exciting and challenging. The things they liked included the array of social networking media accounts for the characters in The Brotherhood (Twitter, Myspace, Facebook) and the challenge of finding encrypted messages through these, the movies that were made to engage the players and provide the storyline, and the end game. They found that the end game was rewarding and they had been challenged enough through out the game to have earned this reward. In conclusion, the play through of The Brotherhood ARG went well beyond our groups expectations and was challenging yet rewarding for the group that played it.
